the passenger

Photobucket

just spent the evening watching a beautiful film: 1975's the passenger, directed by the late michelangelo antonioni and starring jack nicholson alongside maria schneider. i loved it! bleak, quiet, striking imagery. long, incredibly composed shots. beautiful, subtle performances.

she looked at him and he felt a spark tingle in his bones.

the fall

brussels sprouts

Photobucket

i love the recipes mark bittman posts on bitten.

this one is for roasted brussels sprouts:

Ingredients

1 pint brussels sprouts (about a pound)
4 to 6 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, to coat bottom of pan
5 cloves garlic
Salt and pepper to taste
1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar

Method

1. Heat oven to 450 degrees. Trim bottom of brussels sprouts, and slice each in half top to bottom. Heat oil in cast-iron pan over medium-high heat until it shimmers; put sprouts cut side down in one layer in pan. Put in garlic, and sprinkle with salt and pepper.
2. Cook, undisturbed, until sprouts begin to brown on bottom, and transfer to oven. Cook, shaking pan occasionally, until sprouts are quite brown and tender, about 1/2 hour.
3. Taste, and add more salt and pepper if necessary. Stir in balsamic vinegar, and serve hot or warm.

once

how great was this?

if you have yet to see once, just give up whatever you're preoccupied with and go see this gem of a film. shot in only seventeen days with non-actors in the streets of dublin, the film has more music than it does dialogue and is remarkably captivating.

the title image

Photobucket

you know that lovely girl in the photo above? the one staring out the window of a train headed to berlin? that's my friend. and this is her blog-thing.

this is another image from that same train ride:

Photobucket

we were in a fancy dining car really early one morning on our way to berlin. we all ordered eggs, it was amazing. except for the slight miscommunication that left jessica with a plate of hard-boiled eggs. it was to be the coldest weekend i have ever experienced. to this day, i have yet to be as cold as i was that weekend in berlin. aside from the cold, ahead of us was an adventurous, albeit brief weekend, including a debacle checking in to our hostel, a visit to a russian restaurant named pasternak where i fell unfortunately ill, and a lucky spotting of julie delpy at the premiere of her adorable film 2 days in paris at the berlinale.

excuse me while i take a dip in my own nostalgia...

i used to be really in guns 'n' roses. ever since better midler mentioned them in the excellent movie first wives club. anyway, sweet child o' mine is awesome. and this melodic cover found on this myspace page is excellent.

i'm sad

Photobucket

this morning, i went to my stack of dvds in search of the 1979 movie musical hair, directed by milos forman--one of my all-time favorite films, only to find that it was missing. desperate to watch a few scenes from the film, i searched ravenously through my dvd collection, even spending half an hour on the ground reorganizing (and alphabetizing) the films), in hopes of discovering my copy of hair in hiding. however, my search proved unrewarding.

so, this is a desperate cry for help: if you borrowed my copy of hair, please, please return it. anonymity will be granted; no questions will be asked. i may even offer up a reward.

film still by lily idov

alas, i am back! although i have been in new york all this while, i have been kept unusually busy and exhausted by the film i was working on. however, that production of that project wrapped last night, so now i will only be able to offer bad excuses for not updating consistently.

anyway, you can meanwhile take a lot at a few stills from ROSTIGRABEN, a short film i shot a few weeks back with director/writer michael idov.

bluer than velvet...

Photobucket

just spent my evening rewatching blue velvet, as well as the "making of" documentary, the mysteries of love, thus continuing my fanatic david lynch streak.

now this song is stuck in my head...

100 times sorry

i apologize for having neglected this blog. i have been out of the house for the bulk of everyday filming a project i'm working on. today is my one day off! i will try to post fun things here and there. but i may also take my time off today away from the computer screen.
