the balustrade ensemble

the drowning calm...so beautiful. by the balustrade ensemble. reminds me of tall grass and a view of the sky from the city park lawns in the summertime.

adventurous wishes

saw the chronicles of narnia: prince caspian today. i am dying to be in an adventure film where i can sling a bow and arrow or ride atop galloping horses in stunning silver armor.

if not that, maybe a period piece? i plan on watching the french version of d.h. lawrence's lady chatterley later on. there's already a marina in that...maybe i can replace her?

superheroes

firstly, went to the met for the first time in awhile, which was awesome. its incredibly beautiful and there is so much to look it. it makes me feel like an eager young woman. i am anxious to return.

and the second order of awesomeness is that i took in the new superheroes: fashion or fantasy exhibit. according to my little brother, "it's my most favorite exhibit ever!" they had the original costumes worn by batman, superman, iron man, and (my favorite) catwoman, on display. they also had designs by the likes of bernard wilhelm, rick owens, ghesquiere for balenciaga, and thierry mugler.

now i need to find a partner to return with me to see the courbet exhibit....

dylanography

just read the new york times article on suze rotolo, one of bob dylan's early girlfriends whom you would recognize from the cover of the freewheelin' bob dylan:

and i just found out that my favorite dylan song don't think twice, it's alright, was written about her.

So long, honey, babe
Where I'm bound, I can't tell
Goodbye's too good a word, babe
So I'll just say fare thee well
I ain't sayin' you treated me unkind
You coulda done better but I don't mind
You just kinda wasted my precious time
But don't think twice, it's all right

anywhere i lay my head

wow...i actually think that i like this....scarlett johansson singing tom waits' anywhere i lay my head

harvard sailing team

last night i went and saw harvard sailing team perform a "best of" show made up of crowd-pleasing sketches. and these funny dudes called pangea 3000 opened for them. my cheeks hurt from laughing so hard. i could rattle out a list of favorite moments from the evening, but that would exclude you, reader, and i don't want to do that. so, why not get in on the fun, save yourself from pitiful exclusion, and see hst perform on your own...i believe they have a running show at the pit on saturday nights. are you IN? or are you OUT?

Or you can see their videos online. I am partial to these two.

buriedfed

i love this song, buriedfed by miles benjamin anthony robinson, whom i also love.

flavorpill says:
the recent overload of whiskey-soaked, cigarette-stained folkies notwithstanding, there's still something to be said for the virtues of darkly atmospheric americana. and oregon-bred, brooklyn-incubated strummed milkes benjamin anthony robinson is hardly wanting for credibility.

diving bell

i just bought the diving bell and the butterfly on dvd last week. it is one of my favorite movies, as i expect you already know buy it now and be happy and inspired and in awe because of it.

plus you get to see julian schnabel shirtless, carrying mathieu amalric on his shoulders through the ocean to the dock in the middle of the water. and listen to beautiful music by what sounds a lot like explosions in the sky.

i'm going to go watch it again now so i can dream beautiful dreams.

eponymous day

in the motherland of russia, people celebrate both their birthday and their name day, thus resulting in many parties each year. today, my friends, is this blog's name day, so you can congratulate me now (thank you, thank you!), and then go out into the streets and revel with all of the cerveza-drinking mexicans who are so enthusiastic about my blog that they throw this annual nationwide party for it (in spanish, my blog is called el cinco de mayo, cute huh?)

or you can listen over and over again to the song i named this blog after (yes, i'm that silly):

99 problems (but a bitch ain't one)

can't nobody hold me down

coolio is deep

i have always had an incredible soft spot in my heart for coolio. has anyone listened carefully to gangster's paradise? ever since i first truly listened to this song, i have realized that coolio is a poet...a gangster poet. and now i feel strongly about the pain in a gangster's life. here is the song for you, via youtube. and i'd like to highlight some seriously sad lyrics.

"i'm the kinda g that little homies wanna be like,
on my knees in the night
sayin' prayers in the street light"

"death ain't nothin but a heart beat away
i'm livin life do-or-die, what can i say?
i'm twenty-three now, will i live to see twenty-four
the way things are goin, i don't know."

"they say i gotta learn, but nobody's here to teach me
if they can't understand it, how can they reach me?
i guess they can't, i guess that won't--
i guess they frontin', that why i know my life is out of luck, fool."

what do you think about the gangsta's paradise now?

kickin it with the 90s

so, i had a bit too much wine and grappa at my place of work, but that's ok because my roommate and i have been having great fun...great nineties fun that is. here are a bunch of classics that you should recall with pleasure:

hip hop

haven't listen to this song in awhile.

"You would rather have a Lexus or justice, a dream or some substance? A Beamer, a necklace, or freedom?"
